Our story
How it all began
It started with one donkey. Molly spent years alone by a dry riverbed, tied up through sun, cold, and rain, fed nothing but bread. We got to know her on dog walks along that same river — and once her owner finally agreed to let her go, we realised she needed a real home, not just a rescue.
Donkeys need company to be happy, so we found her a companion: Donk. It was love at first sight, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Then came Coli, a 25-year-old former competition horse, abandoned in a field with his spirit broken. With the help of sponsors, he learned to trust again and spent his last years surrounded by the herd he'd found.
The idea to formally register as a nonprofit came from a second Molly — a 28-year-old pony we found badly injured behind a nearby fence. We couldn't save her, but her name — by pure coincidence the same as our first donkey's — became part of ours. Asociación Protectora La Manada de Molly was founded so we could keep doing this properly, for every animal that needed us next.

Helping donkeys, horses, and ponies for as long as they need us
Our goal is simple: help abandoned or mistreated donkeys, horses, and ponies as much as we possibly can — emergency care, veterinary treatment, and a stable home for the ones who have nowhere else to go.

Every donation is accounted for. We tell our supporters what worked, what didn't, and where their money went.

We don't rehome the ones who can't be rehomed elsewhere. Once you're part of this herd, you stay part of it.

Meet the team
Molly Hernández
Founder & director
Founded the sanctuary in 2019 after rescuing her first donkey, Perico, from neglect. The herd hasn't stopped growing since.
Dra. Irene Salas
Veterinarian
Specialized in large animals, she has coordinated treatments and check-ups for the whole herd since 2021.
Marcos Iglesias
Stable & volunteer coordinator
Runs the sanctuary's day-to-day and trains the new volunteers who join the herd.
